How Often Should Barbers Sharpen Convex Shears?

Sharpen convex barber scissors when the cut shows it: pulling, folding and drag matter more than a fixed calendar.

Convex edges need a matching service method. Ask a sharpener familiar with the blade; do not flatten the edge on a general sharpening tool.

There is no single sharpening interval for every barber. A shear used all day over the comb has a different workload from a detail blade used occasionally.

Watch the cut

If hair starts pushing ahead of the blade, folding at the tips or catching through a section, clean the shear and check its tension. If it still drags on hair it used to cut cleanly, arrange service.

Visible nicks or a rough blade feel are reasons to stop using that pair until it has been assessed. Do not keep squeezing harder to finish a cut.

Keep a backup

A second usable cutter lets you send your main shear away without losing a working day. Note the service date and what changed in the cut; your own history becomes a better guide than a generic month count.

Tell the sharpener that the shear has a convex edge and ask how they will service it. The sharpener guide has practical questions, while the maintenance guide covers daily care.
