What a good scissor sharpener does

A professional hair scissor service is more than an edge on a wheel. Expect these steps:

1. Inspection. Tips, edges, ride line, pivot and tension checked before any grinding.
2. Sharpening to the original edge. A convex edge has its curve rebuilt; a bevel edge keeps its angle; serrations are reground where present.
3. Hollow grind and ride line kept. The inner face is honed, not ground flat, so the blades still touch only at the edge and the ride line.
4. Tips aligned so they meet when the shear closes.
5. Pivot cleaned and tension set for your hold.
6. Test cut on hair, wet and dry, before the pair goes back.

Ten questions to ask a sharpener

1. Do you sharpen professional hair scissors every week, or mostly knives and tools?
2. How do you sharpen a convex edge? By hand, or on a machine set up for convex blades?
3. Do you keep the hollow grind and ride line, or grind the inner face?
4. Can you service micro-serrated edges and thinning shears?
5. Do you work on left-handed scissors?
6. Do you test-cut on hair before returning the pair?
7. Will you set the tension, and do you adjust swivel and click-adjuster pivots?
8. Do you quote before working if you find a chip or bent tip?
9. What is the turnaround, door to door?
10. How do you return the scissors, and is the return tracked and insured?

Write the answers down with the date. A service that will not answer questions two and three is a pass.

In-shop, mobile or mail-in

How to post scissors for sharpening

Book first, then pack. Posting a shear without a booking is how pairs go missing.

1. Confirm the booking and the exact delivery address, and ask what to include.
2. Clean, dry and oil the shear so it does not travel wet.
3. Close the blades and hold them shut with a soft tie or rubber band around the rings.
4. Protect the tips with a tip guard, or wrap the blades in a cloth and a folded piece of card.
5. Put the shear in a case or pouch, then into a small rigid box with padding so it cannot move.
6. Add a note with your name, phone, the model, its hand and what you have noticed, such as “folds hair at the tips”.
7. Post it tracked, with signature on delivery if you can. Check the carrier’s rules for sharp items when you lodge it.
8. Keep a record of the tracking number and what you sent.

Before you book: is it the edge?

Not every cutting problem is a blunt edge. Hair folding can be loose tension; a gritty close can be hair in the pivot. Clean the shear, check tension with the drop test in the maintenance guide, and try again. The blunt barber scissors tests take you through four quick checks.

Keep a backup pair on the station

Every barber who sends scissors away needs a second cutter at the same length. A backup also takes the dry or rough work that wears a main pair. A solid 440C cutter from the shears under A$200 range does the job, such as the Mina Sakura in your main length.

When to book

Apprentice. When the cut changes after cleaning and tension. Learn the signs early.
