Black, Rainbow and Gold Barber Scissors Explained

The finish is the look. The steel, edge and handle underneath decide how it cuts.

Black, rainbow and rose gold finished cutting scissors, labelled, on charcoal

Quick answer

Black, rainbow and gold barber scissors are coloured finishes over the same kinds of steel as silver shears. The finish changes the look, not the cut. Choose the length, hand, edge and steel first, then pick the colour. A coated shear needs gentle care: no abrasive cloths or harsh solvents on the finish.

A black, rainbow or gold finish is the colour on the outside. The steel, edge and handle underneath decide how the shear cuts. Pick those first, then the colour you want to see on your station.

Two black cutters can have different edges and handles. A gold pivot can sit on an otherwise silver shear. Keep the finish as its own line in the comparison.

Steel and hardnessThe blade material, such as 440C or VG10, and its HRC
Edge and profileConvex, bevel or micro-serrated; sword or standard

“Rainbow, 440C, convex, right-handed offset, 6.0″” is five separate facts. Rainbow tells you only the first one. The steel guide explains the materials, the blade guide covers edges, and the handle guide covers layouts.

Appearance and specification

Appearance can be described here.
Edge line in this view
The exact cutting design needs its own specification.
Visible finish
Colour, sheen and the areas shown in a photograph. Check the actual model and view.
Documented coating
The maker's named coating and where it is applied. An unknown type stays open.
Blade material
The published material designation for the selected tool. Colour cannot fill this field.
Cutting design
Edge geometry, surface detail, profile or tooth design. Check these separately.

Ask which care instructions apply to the actual surface and mechanism. A familiar colour does not establish a compatible cleaning product.

Whole-blade concept view, not to scale. Highlights locate terms; they do not show coating coverage, thickness, chemical layers, measured sharpness or a particular edge geometry.

Black scissors

A dark finish over the blades and handles. We stock black from entry to premium: the Mina Ash Black in 5.5″ and 6.0″ with SUS440C and a convex edge, up to VG10 sword blades in the Ichiro Tsuki and the Juntetsu Matte Black. See the black shears collection.

Rainbow scissors

Ichiro cutting shear with a multicoloured reflective finish across the blades and offset rings.

A multicoloured finish that shifts with the light. The Ichiro Rainbow pairs it with 440C and a convex edge; the Mina Rainbow II is the entry option. Browse the rainbow collection.

Gold and rose gold scissors

Gold usually appears as detail: pivot, rings or blade accents over a dark or silver body. Rose gold runs from accents to the whole shear. The rose gold collection lists the Ichiro and Juntetsu options.

Care for a coated shear

The routine is the same as any shear: wipe dry after each client, oil the pivot at close, store closed. The difference is the surface. Use a soft cloth, and keep abrasive pads, metal polish and harsh solvents off the finish. Follow the maker’s instructions for the exact model. The maintenance guide covers the daily routine.

When you book a sharpen, tell the service it is a coated model so the blade faces are protected. The sharpening guide lists what to ask.

Pick by stage

  • Apprentice: Mina Ash Black or Mina Rainbow II: SUS440C, convex edge, offset.
  • Working barber: Ichiro Rainbow or Ash Gold for 440C and a convex edge.
  • Upgrade: Ichiro Tsuki black or Juntetsu Rose Gold for VG10.

Questions

Are black barber scissors better than silver ones?

No. Black is a finish. A black shear and a silver shear with the same steel, edge and handle cut the same. Buy black because you like it, after the length and edge suit your work.

Does a coloured finish wear off?

With heavy daily use a finish can wear at contact points such as the rings. That is cosmetic. The cutting edge is sharpened steel either way.

Can you sharpen black or rainbow scissors?

Yes. The edge is sharpened like any other shear. Tell the sharpener it is a coated model so they protect the finish on the blade faces.

How do I clean coloured scissors?

Wipe with a soft dry cloth after each client and oil the pivot at close. Avoid abrasive pads, polishes and harsh solvents on the coated surfaces. Follow the maker's instructions for the exact model.

Where can I see all the black scissors in stock?

The black shears collection lists them all, and there are separate rainbow and rose gold collections.
