Are Ichiro Scissors Good? A Barber's Verdict
Quick answer
Yes. Ichiro scissors are good for apprentices and working barbers stepping up from entry steel without a big jump in price. Most cutters list 440C at 58 to 60 HRC, the Taiyo VG-10 at 60 to 62. Start with the Offset at 6.0″.
Our verdict
Yes for apprentices moving up and barbers who want 440C or VG-10 sword and convex cutters in every length from 4.5″ to 7.0″. Skip if you're left-handed or want ATS-314 cobalt steel.

Best Ichiro by job
Daily cutter: the Offset
The Offset is the Ichiro to start with: a 440C sword-profile cutter with a right-handed offset grip in five lengths. Take 6.0″ for general barbering. Add 5.0″ for detail or 7.0″ for comb work later, in the same handle. The Offset set adds a 6.0″ thinner.
Apprentice: Ergo Apprentice
The Ergo Apprentice makes you choose the edge as well as the length. The 5.5″ has a convex slice edge for detail and moving cuts. The 6.0″ has a micro-serrated edge that grips hair for blunt work and scissor-over-comb. Both list stainless alloy at 56 to 58 HRC. For more first-kit options, see the apprentice scissors list.
Fades and detail: Ichiko 4.5″
The Ichiko is a short offset cutter with a convex slicing blade, in stock at 4.5″. It’s built for tight areas around ears, neckline and fringe. Keep a longer cutter beside it for broad comb work. More options sit in the fade scissors list.
Scissor-over-comb: Taiyo 7.0″
The Taiyo is the cutter in Ichiro’s VG-10 line, with a sword-profile blade and offset handle, in stock at 6.0″ and 7.0″. Take 7.0″ for long over-comb strokes. If you’d rather stay in 440C, the Tsurugi is a sword-profile barber cutter at 6.5″ or 7.0″.
Best for scissor-over-comb
Ichiro Premium Series: Taiyo VG10 Hair Cutting Scissors
In stock: 6.0″, 7.0″
Thinning and texture: 16T or the Offset thinner
The 16T is a 6.0″ texturiser with 16 teeth for deliberate weight removal and separated texture. For softer blending, the Offset thinner is a 6.0″ 440C finishing shear. Choose by the finish you want; the texturising guide explains tooth shape and spacing.
Best texturiser
Swivel: Kawa Z-Balance
The Kawa Z-Balance Swivel has a rotating thumb ring for barbers who shift hand angle through a cut, in 440C at 6.0″. If you prefer a fixed thumb, stay with the Offset.
Left-handed: none in stock
Some Ichiro lines list left builds, but only right-hand builds are in stock right now. Go to the left-handed collection or the left-handed list.
Before you buy an Ichiro
- Size: sizes are whole-shear length. Buy the length you cut with now; the size guide shows how to measure.
- Blade: the Offset, Tsurugi and Taiyo are sword-profile; the Ichiko is convex. A sword profile is a blade shape, not an edge type, as the edge guide explains.
- Sets: check what comes in the box. The Offset set adds a thinner; the three and four-piece Master kits add a second cutter.
- Service: book a sharpener who works on Japanese edges. See sharpening in Australia, the warranty and the returns page.
Which Ichiro for you
- Apprentice: the Ergo Apprentice, or a Mina set if budget is tight.
- Working barber: the Offset at 6.0″ plus the Taiyo at 7.0″.
- Upgrade: add the Ichiko for detail, or move to harder steel with the Juntetsu review.
